When I was about eleven years old, I thought Kolchak: The Night Stalker was just about the scariest show on TV and I loved it. Looking at it through adult eyes, it seems a bit more campy than creepy, but it's still well done for what it is. Darren McGavin always managed to play the titular character right up toβbut never quite overβthe top. I know what I'm watching Halloween night! This Universal-branded reissue DVD set has one big difference from the original MGM-branded set in that it is on five single-sided discs, whereas the original was on three discs, one single-sided and two double-sided 'flippy discs'. I have had more than one flippy disc fail over the years and was glad to have an option.

If you enjoy the old, pure and genuine TV shows for the 70βs this one is at the top of the list. Darren McGavin was awesome in his role as the fearless news reporter famously know as The Night Stalker. Clean scary entertainment at its very best...

Grew up watching this series with my mom in the late 70s. Still enjoyed & loved it as I got older. Darren McGavin plays Kolchak who is such a fascinating character, as is his boss Tony Vincenzo, and his other office workers. Especially the sweet Mrs Emily. The soundtrack to the show also was very well done. It really adds to the creepiness, and suspense. Kudos to the work that was put into this series. I only wish it could have kept going. The creator of The X-Files was also a fan of this show which inspired him to create the hit show The X-Files. Fox Mulder is very much like Kolchak. Always after the truth. Even if it kills him. My only complaint about the DVD set is the the movie: The Night Stalker movie (that started it all) and The Night Strangler are not part of the set. But instead sold separately. If they had been included I'd have been even happier. However, to own this set is a dream come true. The stories are fun, kinda scary when you're a kid growing up watching these like I did. However the characters are well fleshed out and the actors of the time were great. Something I can't say much for on today's tv. The show didn't have to go over the top with special effects or elaborate gimmicks. Sometimes a little cheesy some may quibble, however it's the good cheese you enjoy. This show had a lot of heart and spirit. The remake of this show in the late 2000s was so bad they cancelled it. Goes to show you can't remake something that was already perfect.Read full review

This is 70's TV at its best. Good writing, good plots, good acting, interesting guest stars, and who doesn't love a vintage yellow convertible mustang?

I saw this for sale and remembered this show from the β70s. I remembered how much I loved the show and knew I needed this boxset in the collection. The entire series was awesome, but short lived. The two movies they did of the same character are not included but this set is a must have.
