I bought up copies of this book because I did a series of art comissioned by the publisher, and I focused on flags and let them choose the one to use for the cover. For a decade this cover was used. I felt it was important as an artist to not focus on nationality or unimportant topics that might divide us,and nothing divides more than a flag. And so it was odd that the editor singled me out to do it. My flags were more than what they seemed on the surface, I thought strongly about who would be buying this book, and why. So these flags are layered. One flag was done on top of a price list for a recent show I had in NYC, and so it's first layer in my mind was capitalism, without judgement of good or bad. Artists need to eat too. But as I applied stripes and the block of blue and the fifty stars new ideas took over. Each flag was began under some spirit. The one they chose I made for lawyers actually. And it was the first one I began too. I had trouble doing the stars on such a small scale (the medium was oil pastels). But one day as I was walking the streets of the city I found a little tiny plastic star. Was meant to be. I played around with doing the "Don't tred on me" flag, since I liked that concept better than a flag of a nationstate.Read full review
This compact copy of The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States is just what I needed. I have been wanting to read them because our liberties are slowly being taken from us. We need to know just what they are so we can be sure to keep them. I can carry this with me in my purse so I have it with me.
