This was an interesting book, but it took a lot of concentration to get through. It is not so much a book about recreational reading, but more about "serious" reading. The author wants you to find out "What is the point", "What does it say?", "Is it true (or beautiful)?, and "How does it apply?". He goes over how to first look at a book to get a sense of what it is about, then how to read thoughtfully, and decide whether you agree, or if you don't, WHY you don't agree. I found, in my reading of it, that he repeats his ideas often, which is a good way to remember (!), but can get boring. Still, a very interesting and useful book on how to get the most out of your reading.
This is an excellent book for novice and experienced readers alike. Readers who wish to read better and get more out of their investment, and who wish also to understand the mind of an author, will benefit greatly from this book. I can see how this book has impacted me, because right about page 100, I started actually writing in the book, outlining and notetaking in the margins, highlighting, and trying to put the author into my own words, all things the writer insists we do. If you want to become a better reader, GET THIS BOOK!
This book was published 36 years ago. Many of you buying this for a class were not even born yet. The writing is, at times, pompous and scholarly (read: difficult to plow through). Having said all that, Adler has some excellent advice on how to become a stronger reader. But the book's age is definitely beginning to show.
An OUTSTANDING educational easy read that will change the quality/content of the books you choose to read. Also how to get the most out of the material in a time effecient manor. If your a Born Again believer in Jesus Christ this will tremendously help with your Bible study and determining what theology books will most likely benefit you or be a waste of your time before investing the time in actually reading them.
