Imagine being ten years old again and seeing a meteor crash behind your house. Upon investigation, you find a wrecked spaceship and injured person. While trying to wake him, an alien monster (Maguar) appears behind you and tries to take your head off! Luckily, the unconscious person woke up at the same time and pulled you out of the way. A battle begins and you get involved whether you like it or not!! After escaping into the spacecraft and discovering you're trapped, a Ribers (a liquid metal, intelligent lifeform) merges with you, providing the power to defeat the Maguar. This is an early sequence to Figure 17, an excellent series portraying a slice of the life of Tsubasa Shiina (a timid, shy 4th grader) after she moves to Hokkaido. While the series seems to be geared more towards girls, boys should find the series entertaining due to the fight sequences against the alien Maguars and the subsequent large explosions. But children should be careful, otherwise they might learn something! Overall, I'd say about forty percent of the series is action-oriented and the rest is character development or setup for the action. The action sequences are bloodless but may be considered slightly violent for some parents even though the fights are almost always with the alien Maguars. The character development sequences handle coming of age topics such as building self-confidence, resolving separation anxiety and selfishness, the pangs of first love and even dealing with the death of a close friend. For those interested, each episode runs about 45 minutes, is drawn in a down-to-earth style using watercolors and uses folksy music by The ALFEE to convey a more relaxed atmosphere.
