Product Information

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, based on the Patricia Highsmith novel, quickly became one of Alfred Hitchcock's most successful thrillers and remains one of his most popular films. En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker). What begins as a chance encounter turns into a series of morbid confrontations, as Bruno manipulates his way into Guy's life. Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but cannot get a divorce from his wife, Miriam (Laura Elliot). So Bruno suggests the men swap murders, which would leave no traceable clues or possible motives. Though Guy refuses, it will not be so easy to rid himself of the psychopathic Bruno. The film is tightly paced and disturbing from beginning to end, an effect heightened by Hitchcock's inventive camera work, including a terrifying sequence shot through a pair of eyeglasses that have been knocked to the ground.

    Lightning from a clear sky, as an innocent man gets dragged into a nightmare

    This is a good Hitchcock film from the 1940s. My objection is to the "Two-Disc Special Edition" designation. It implies that the "Preview Version" differs substantially from the "Final Release Version." In fact, there is virtually no difference at all between the versions, just extra cost.

    Entertaining, sort of.

    My wife and I watched this movie and it was just ok. Parts of it were kind of creepy. The book is SO much better!! But for the most part it was entertaining, and after all, it is a good old fashioned black and white movie!

    Hitchcock at his best.

    A story that has been repeated in other forms, but never as well as it is here. A psychotic rich guy concocts a plan to do away with his father which involves an innocent man. Quite delicious.

    HITCHCOCK USES THE CONFINES OF THE RESTAURANT CAR ON AN ELEGANT AMERICAN PASSENGER TRAIN, TYPICAL OF THE 1940'S, FOR TWO STRANGERS TO MEET ONE ANOTHER BY ACCIDENTALLY (THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN QUESTIONED) BUMPING FEET UNDER A DINING TABLE ON THE TRAIN. MANY FILM HISTORIANS CONSIDER THIS FILM ONE OF HIS BEST, OVER HIS LONG AND VARIED CAREER. ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S FAVORITE FILM, ACCORDING TO HIS DAUGHTER PAT IS "SHADOW OF A DOUBT", BUT I DO NOT THINK THIS ONE, OR "LIFEBOAT" WOULD BE FAR BEHIND. HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG WITH ANY HITCHCOCK FILM, ESPECIALLY THESE FILM NOIR CLASSICS FROM THE 1940'S! DON'T MISS THIS ONE, OR ANY ONE OF HIS OTHER MASTERPIECES.
