About this product

Product Information

He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. -from the Song of David (2 Samuel 22:35) The Bronze Bow , written by Elizabeth George Speare (author of The Witch of Blackbird Pond ) won the Newbery Medal in 1962. This gripping, action-packed novel tells the story of eighteen-year-old Daniel bar Jamin--a fierce, hotheaded young man bent on revenging his father's death by forcing the Romans from his land of Israel. Daniel's palpable hatred for Romans wanes only when he starts to hear the gentle lessons of the traveling carpenter, Jesus of Nazareth. A fast-paced, suspenseful, vividly wrought tale of friendship, loyalty, the idea of home, community . . . and ultimately, as Jesus says to Daniel on page 224: "Can't you see, Daniel, it is hate that is the enemy? Not men. Hate does not die with killing. It only springs up a hundredfold. The only thing stronger than hate is love." A powerful, relevant read in turbulent times.

  • He enables me to bend a bow of bronze.

Do you like old stories, battles, and mysteries? If you do then this is the book for you! This book shows you the real battles – hatred vs. love , vengeance vs. forgiveness , and anger vs. patience. Daniel bar Jamin lives up in the mountains with Rosh and his gang. The gang is made up of zealots and Roman haters. The gang has vowed to destroy the Romans whatever the cost, even if the cost is their own lives. Will it end up costing Daniel his life? And why does Daniel hate the Romans so much? Daniel Jamin was an apprentice to Amalek the blacksmith, but ran away from him. His parents died, and his grandmother was left to raise him and his sister Leah. Daniel loves his sister very much, but she had a problem, she refused to go outside and if you tried to make her she screams and howl. ...

  • It was in new condition, came fast for son's schoolwork

It was action packed, had a deep Christian tone which we really enjoyed and the story was a life lesson. She wrote about love and faith being stronger than hate and war. In today's times, this book is well suited for our youth to explore a story from long ago but no less violent than today's turbulent times. Just a touch of very modest romance as well. It kept your attention until the end.

  • Excellent read

The book cover is really nice condition. However, the pages were highlighted more than I anticipated.

  • Not Very Historical, Historical Fiction

I was hoping it would paint an insightful, historically accurate picture of the region and period. It seems to deal with the era relatively superficially. The world of the average Jew is portrayed as little more than oppressive to the protagonist.

  • Critique of the Bronze Bow

I loved that the story takes place in Israel about the same time as Jesus was alive and the main character actually meets Him in the story. The Main Character, a boy, Daniel, has struggles with the death of his father and overcomes pride issues and has to take care of his sister. He is a mature 17 year old ---taking on responsibilities unlike most 17 year olds. It is a good story but needs parental guidence on some of the issues shown in the story.
