About this product

Product Information

A Newbery Honor Book Winner of a Newbery Honor, an exciting ancient Egyptian mystery Ranofer wants only one thing in the world: to be a master goldsmith like his beloved father was. But how can he when he is all but imprisoned by his evil half brother, Gebu? Ranofer knows the only way he can escape Gebu's abuse is by changing his destiny. But can a poor boy with no skills survive on the cutthroat streets of ancient Thebes? Then Ranofer finds a priceless golden goblet in Gebu's room and he knows his luck-and his destiny-are about to change. " Exceptionally vivid, swiftpaced, and stirring."-- The Horn Book "An exhilarating story of the arduous fulfillment of a boy's dream . . . We are given a most worthy hero in Ranofer, one who struggles with his own fears and ideals, who smarts under his own cowardice, but who finds the power to rise to his own strength. This plus the vividly detailed setting make the book an excellent choice."-- Kirkus Reviews

  • Great story for those studying Ancient Egypt

I'll be using this book with my 6th grade class. They are studying Ancient Egypt. The book contains challenging vocabulary. It also contains many elements of Ancient Egypt including the gods, burial of the dead, the afterlife, social classes, apprenticeship, etc. The story includes an abusive step brother and crime, but it also includes friendships and caring.

  • A great egyptian tale!!!!

I absolutly loved this book. I read it when I was in middle school. I looked everywhere for it because I couldn't remember the name of the book. Then one day I figured it out and was so excited to get the book. I read it in about 3-4 days. It is a rather simply book for young adults. I think it portrays the ways of egyptian culture quite well! It is a great read! I'd recommend it to anybody!

  • A compelling read

  • awesome

"Awesome" is the word my 6th grade boy used to describe the book. It was a book his teacher required him to read but I never had to remind him to read. He looked forward to reading it. The book taught him a lot about Egypt and it has inspired him to learn more about history and ancient Egypt.
