About this product

Product Information

This charming classic love story, first published in 1970, brings together twenty years of correspondence between Helene Hanff, at the time, a freelance writer living in New York City, and a used-book dealer in London at 84, Charing Cross Road. Through the years, though never meeting and separated both geographically and culturally, they share a winsome, sentimental friendship based on their common love for books. Their relationship, captured so acutely in these letters, is one that has touched the hearts of thousands of readers around the world. " 84, Charing Cross Road will beguile and put you in tune with mankind... It will provide an emollient for the spirit and sheath for the exposed nerve." -- The New York Times "A unique, throat-lumping, side-splitting treasure." -- San Francisco Examiner

    The characters become like family.

This a delightful of a small book store and a New York author/playwright. It is a short piece but I have benefited from rereading it many times. I highly recommend it, especially if you have a love for good books, as the author had.

  • Laugh out loud exchange of letters between a writer and book shop in London

Charming book of letters exchanged between a New York writer and a London used book shop over a 20 year period beginning in 1949. Writer cajoles and lambastes the book seller for the books she wants, insisting they be of quality, not with cardboard covers. She always reads a book first from the public library before deciding to purchase it. She befriends first Frank, her correspondent, and eventually the book shop staff. She sends them packets of foods that are still rationed in the UK after WWII. Such a fun read, and gives you a slice of life of a NY writer. Helene Hanff wrote scripts for Elery Queen TV series, children's books, text books, and un-produced plays. Look for the sequel to this, The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, as well. We read this for my book group, and it got a unanimous ...

  • Exceptional read.

Once I finished the copy my son sent me I knew many of my friends would enjoy it. I’ve bought four copies and passed them around our book club. With this isolation continuing you never know when you’ll find a book hanging on your back gate. This one is extra special. Highly recommended. Thank you

  • 84 Charing Cross Road. A correspondence between a buyer in the US and bookstore in the UK and the friendship which ensued over the years.

A re-read of a book I had read years ago and was delighted to re-visit this "old friend." It shows how books can bring strangers to friends, and is well written with humor and a touch of pathos.

  • A good book for anyone who loves books or human kindness.

I loved reading this book, about strangers who reach out to each other in many ways. It is one of those books that keeps you happy all the way through, and I loved it.
