Thought Provoking First Person Account
I bought this book because it was a required reading in my college history course. After reading it though, I was glad that it was a required book as I might never have had the opportunity to be exposed to it otherwise. The book was originally written by Frederick Douglass himself but also includes a preface and a letter by two individuals with whom he was acquainted. The purpose of those was to confirm that an African slave (whom many thought incapable of such a profound writing) had indeed been the author of this book. Frederick Douglass tells his life story from birth into his early 20s. Although not documented in the book, Frederick Douglass would go on to be very involved as a leader in the Abolitionist Movement and he conferred with President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 on the ... I bought this book because it was a required reading in my college history course.
