About this product

Product Information

Jeanne Wakatsuki was seven years old in 1942 when her family was uprooted from their home and sent to live at Manzanar internment camp--with 10,000 other Japanese Americans. Along with searchlight towers and armed guards, Manzanar ludicrously featured cheerleaders, Boy Scouts, sock hops, baton twirling lessons and a dance band called the Jive Bombers who would play any popular song except the nation's #1 hit: "Don't Fence Me In." Farewell to Manzanar is the true story of one spirited Japanese-American family's attempt to survive the indignities of forced detention . . . and of a native-born American child who discovered what it was like to grow up behind barbed wire in the United States.

  • Manzanar: buy it, it's a very good book about a part of American history

I'm a military history buff, mainly concentrating from WW 2 and later. It's also hard to find good books on a civillians point of view during the war years. I am also a truck driver and for years I have driven past the Manzanar camp on I-395 in California. I also found out that there was another camp in Tule Lake which is in the northern part of California, a place I have driven to several times this year, but all that is left of the camp is a heavily weather bronze plack not far from the original camp. In reading Miss Wakatsuki's memoirs, it's rather chilling to see how fast the government can move against any group of people. But you have to remember how racist many Americans were back then.

  • EXCELLENT Should be required reading

This should be required reading for all, lest we forget what all the hate leads to. It is also a reminder of the spirit of hope ,pride and forgiveness. I hope I can find more memoirs of this time.

  • An Appropriate Title

This book is an excellent read. It depicts the lives of Japanese descent Americans who were incarcerated during WW II in California. The Co-Author, Ms Jeanne W. Houston, was at the time 7 yrs old. She reflects about the times spent (3 1/2 yrs) and it truly is a revelation. Highly recommended.

  • I love this book!

A really interesting and well written book to read! It was great when I read it back in high school and is still great now! It tells of a time and circumstance in Americas history that not everyone knows or has even heard of. I would greatly recommend to anyone this book, it is NOT a waste of time for sure!

  • Need this book

Reading for my class and needed it for a good deal and found it here thanks so much for having it at a good price.
