About this product

Product Information

This Newbery Honor winner and #1 New York Times bestseller is a beloved modern classic. Hoot features a new kid and his new bully, alligators, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes. Everybody loves Mother Paula's pancakes. Everybody, that is, except the colony of cute but endangered owls that live on the building site of the new restaurant. Can the awkward new kid and his feral friend prank the pancake people out of town? Or is the owls' fate cemented in pancake batter? Welcome to Carl Hiaasen's Florida--where the creatures are wild and the people are wilder!

Reviews
"It seems unlikely that the master of noir-tinged, surrealistic black humor would write a novel for young readers. And yet, there has always been something delightfully juvenile about Hiaasen's imagination; beneath the bent cynicism lurks a distinctly 12-year-old cackle. In this thoroughly engaging tale of how middle schooler Roy Eberhardt, new kid in Coconut Cove, learns to love South Florida, Hiaasen lets his inner kid run rampant, both the subversive side that loves to see grown-ups make fools of themselves and the righteously indignant side, appalled at the mess being made of our planet. The story is full of offbeat humor, buffoonish yet charming supporting characters, and genuinely touching scenes of children enjoying the wildness of nature. He deserves a warm welcome into children's publishing."-Booklist "A wonderful tour-de-force."-The Boston Globe "A rollicking, righteous story."-The Miami Herald "You don't have to be a young adult to enjoy it."-The New York Times Book Review "Yes, it is a hoot."-The Washington Post Book World, "It seems unlikely that the master of noir-tinged, surrealistic black humor would write a novel for young readers. Anything by Hiaasen.

Although I'd rather get poked in the eye with a sharp strick than visit south FL in summer, Hiaasen is such a good writer and environmentalist that I'll read anythng he's written. His books for Juveniles informatively speak to the "yewts", and might encourage them into action. The book itself arrived promptly and in "good" condition. It was nice to see some words underlined by previous readers...gave some insight as to what would attract the attention of a young person.

  • Great story...important messages...VERY ENTERTAINING!

This is a super book for kids of all ages! Our grandson read Hoot as a school assignment. The importance of environmental and wildlife preservation vs. business and political corruption were woven into a very eye opening yet entertaining novel. The dynamics of family issues, peer pressure at school, and sticking to one's personal moral values, makes Hoot into a highly reccommended book. Great balance of suspense, humor, and a very heartwarming story.....I finished this book before my grandson....couldn't put it down!

  • Hoot--great hook, what could it be?

This is a great read for any age. The environmentalist push of our day will certainly come across in this book. Great for book clubs especially if asking questions that do not correspond with the direction taken with the movie which in a few scenes are different from the book. A thought-provoking plot of the little guy versus the big conglomeration and all the battles that enfold. How can a story of little owls be anything but cute and fun. Hiaasen's certainly proved he can write for any genre. Can't wait to see what other young adult books he prints in the future.

  • Good read for a kidl

    My granddaughter loved this book.
