About this product

Product Information

Hal Ashby's film of Woody Guthrie's autobiography, BOUND FOR GLORY, recounts the protest singer's life starting when he's a young man with a wife and two children, trying to find work as a sign painter in the Dust Bowl-ravaged Texas of the 1930s. He leaves his wife, Mary (Melinda Dillon), with her family and, like thousands of others, rides the rails to California. Along the way he sees the brutal treatment of men by the railroad's hired thugs before being thrown into a hard life in the migrant workers camps of the San Fernando Valley. He begins to write songs about everything he's seen and joins Ozark Bule on the radio, not just singing about union organizing, but actually going to meetings and brawling with union-busting goons. When the radio station management, as a result of pressure from its advertisers, tells Woody--who's now attracting a following with his protest songs and ballads about the lives of oppressed people--that he can't do those songs, he gives up the radio program and decides to ride the rails to New York to seek a larger audience for his music. David Carradine, as Guthrie, does his own singing, giving an intimacy to the songs that might have been lost by dubbing. The award-winning cinematography by Haskell Wexler captures both the bleakness of the Great Depression and the beautiful grandeur of America, exactly what Guthrie expressed in his songs.

  • Bound For Glory

I love David Carradine's performance in this fictional dramatization of Woody Guthrie's interesting life--much like David's own life. I knew him when we were neighbors in Sunland, CA and his own genius has been chased by many similar demons of his own design. He told me once that he favored this role and was comfortable with his performance. If you like him in this movie, you might really be taken with his work in "Six Against the Rock" and "Gray Lady Down". I was watching Woody Guthrie's biography on the Public Television Channel and remembered David's great rendition of Woody's life, which, like him, I hadn't seen in many years. I had to purchase it because the local video rental store out here in Mayberry didn't have it.

  • A True American Spirit Movie

This is an excellent movie of the true story of Woody Guthrie the folk singer of the 1930's. It is about his fight for the American people and forming Unions. It is well worth the watch! Woody did the right things because he cared for the less fortunate people. He could have had fame and fortune but instead he fought for the people. He was a true American hero, if you ask me. From the life of a hobo to riches, he always did the right thing. This movie has a lot of trains and is very nicely filmed. It gives you the feel of what it was like to live in the depression era. I thought that the movie should have showed a bit more of his life after he decided against fame, but that was just a small disappointment. It does end with a smile but yet it could have gone on a bit longer to show the rest ...

  • Deportee

In the middle of the bio of Woody Guthrie his character is singing the ballad of 28 Mexican workers who were being deported from Oakland, Calif to Mexico when their plane crashed in Coalinga, Ca. The Mexicans were buried in a mass grave with no markers in the Catholic cemetery in Fresno, Ca and this was all brought to lite when writer Tim Z. Hernandez was doing research for his classic book Manana Means Heaven and then he wrote his second book entitled "All they will call you is Deportee." This is a little part of the movie and I was surprised they included it in the movie but it shows the depth of Woodies ballads. I added this DVD in the Chicano Research Center under deportation and Mexican farm workers.
