About this product

Product Information

A VERY classic from Eric Carle, creator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar One day a tiny cricket is born and meets a big cricket who chirps his welcome. The tiny cricket tries to respond, but there is no sound. The quiet cricket then makes his way into the world, meeting one insect after another, each of whom greets the little cricket with a cheery hello--the hum of a bee, the whirr of a dragonfly, the whisper of a praying mantis. The cricket rubs his wings together each time, but nothing happens, not a sound. Until the day he meets another cricket, a female, and something different happens . . . As children turn the page on this wonderful moment, they are greeted with a surprise--an actual chirp Full of Eric Carle's gorgeous and lush collage art, a gentle rhythmic text for read-alouds, and a wonder-inducing surprise at the end, The Very Quiet Cricket remains an all-time favorite from one of the true masters of picture-book making. Batteries are replaceable. Please use two 1.5 volt L1131 button cell batteries.

    Beautiful children's classic

This children's classic is a wonderful book to share with even the youngest children. The illustrations are delightful. Older children can learn the names of the various insects in the story, and the surprise "chirp" at the end is universally appealing.

  • The Very Quiet Cricket-educational

I bought this story for my classroom to combine an author study (Eric Carle) and a Life Cycles unit. It is a wonderful, repetitive story, appropriate for infants through 1st grade (or higher). It demonstrates the growth of an insect from egg to adult with a terrific underlying theme of trying until you achieve your goal. The story also involves movement and sound which keep children totally enthralled! A great way to keep those fidgety little ones involved. The children will want to read it again and again! Highly recommended(along w/ Eric Carles' other repetitive stories).

  • Once burned, twice wary.

The story is excellent. I bought it for my daughter, who is an elementary special education teacher. However, the book they sent is a total disappointment. It is much smaller than the one I thought I was ordering. Even worse, the last page is supposed to trigger a cute and pleasantly surprising cricket chirp. Unfortunately, this feature did not work on the book I received. I have noticed that other buyers also have had this problem. Since it is not worth the trouble to return it, it goes in the trash. Lesson learned.
