About this product

Product Information

Based upon the author's own successful workshops, Drawing for the Absolute and Utter Beginner helps new artists create competent, often eloquent drawings. A series of progressive lessons demonstrates such essential skills as recording edges, creating dimension, adding accuracy, developing value, balancing compositional elements, and drawing the human face, both frontal and profile views. Step by step, readers learn how to create a reasonable likeness of an object and give it spatial depth using such simple black-and-white mediums as pens, pencils, charcoal, and graphite wash. Inspirational examples and tips for success from beginning students who have worked on the same material confirm readers' successes, and allow readers to consider the advice and impressions of others at the same level.

  • Let Your Personal Artistic Style Shine!

I discovered this book at our local library. When I came to the end of allowable renewals, I decided to buy so I could continue the easy to follow lessons. I made a commitment to buy the recommended supplies suggested. The price of the book and supplies is well worth the investment when you consider the cost of art classes. With the book you can go at your own pace. I plan to take some classes in the future but wanted to be well acquainted with some basics this book offers. I especially like that the author shares "testimonials" of other students. She shows examples of how different artists interpret the same subject. You are immediately encouraged to be yourself and let your own personal style come forth; not to compare yourself to others rather to critque your own work with a more ...

  • Disappointed and disgusted

I'm sure there are some useful suggestions in the book, however my daughter took one look at all the supplies she 'had to have to draw' and burst into tears! What BS! There is some rule that says paper and pencil aren't good enough? Apparently it's imperative to send $100 or more or you just can't do. I had a similar art teacher at University who turned me off on art for decades afterward. And that was after I had teachers praise my artwork throughout public schooling! I've always felt encouragement was a better way of teaching. Silly me! Apparently setting up obstacles to be surmounted from the beginning (that is to say spending money you don't have in this awful economy) is an automatic fail. If you're looking for help and encouragement DON'T buy this book. I've since found several ...
