About this product

Product Information

Gao Wai-Tung (Winston Chao) lives the good life: He runs a successful real-estate business in New York and has a wonderful relationship with his lover, Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein). The only problem is that his elderly parents in Taiwan don't know he's gay--and they're pushing him to get married and present them with a grandchild. So, with Simon's approval, Wai-Tung strikes a bargain with Wei-Wei (May Chin), a charming young Chinese woman who is one of his tenants. If she'll marry him, he'll help her get a green card so she can stay in the United States. The charade culiminates in an elaborate Chinese banquet that no one will soon forget. The second in director Ang Lee's Father Knows Best trilogy (completed by PUSHING HANDS and EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN), THE WEDDING BANQUET established Lee as a superior observer of intimate and domestic life. Cultural miscommunication, the obligations of tradition, and the difficulty of coming out as gay are all depicted with both hilarity and heartbreaking reality.

A romantic drama filled with comedy, or a romantic comedy filled with drama. Take your pick.

THE WEDDING BANQUET is, now, a 30 year old film about a gay son whose parents want him to marry and produce a grandson. He is happily partnered with a man, but is afraid to tell his parents about who he really is. Fear keeps him in the closet, causes him to lie to his parents, and causes numerous complications. Ultimately all is revealed, and everyone gets what they want, if not in the way they expected.

  • Still timely today with Chinese outlook

Saw this during year it can out on cable TV. It was definitely a risky movie for the Chinese audience to watch and to admit approval of having a gay son or daughter back then. Even now, it's difficult for Chinese children to come out to their parents and for their parents to approve. My ex-husband and his brother each have gay sons whom they weren't willing to accept when each came out. It took awhile for each father to accept his son and continue to live him. It still remains an issue in the Chinese culture to readily accept a gay child in the family so movie's plot line could still happen today.

  • The Wedding Banquet most of us would never have

This is a gay sort of coming out movie. As a spoiler, gay men and straight women do work out sometimes. The film is intriguing to the extent of where Simon will be at the end. May Chin (Wei-Wei) is really funny and plays the part very well. I enjoyed watching the wedding picture process, the gown was gorgeous, but it looked really expensive. I recommend this movie!

  • WHAT A DELIGHT!

I do not want to give anything away in this review. However, I have used it as an entertaining way of viewing being a gay Chinese man in New York who has traditional Chinese parents who want him married and producing grandchildren It is an excellent teaching tool with selected adult students. While all is played for comedy, there is enough pathos and angst to balance the plot. The actors are excellent and there are no really prurient scenes, even with its "R" rating. "The Wedding Banquet" is an early effort by Ang Lee who also directed "Brokeback Mountain." I have not seen "Brokeback Mountain" as I have no interest in the plot. But, "The Wedding Banquet" is a comedy and highly enjoyable. Lastly, I have a caveat - if you are uncomfortable with gay issues in any form, stay away from ...

  • Great Movie

wonderfully accurate view of one gay relationship. A couple, one American, one from Taiwan This film brings up all kinds of issues, such as gay acceptance, is lying ever good?, personal responsibility, growing up, abortion, respect, committment this couple have been together in NYC for years. It is both a sweet love story and a dramatic film about a couple dealing with parents. I think in the end all the characters in the film ended up with more than they ever hoped for. There was honesty about being gay. There was help for an immigrant wanting to stay in the US and a gay couple was about to become parents....a perfect coming out gift for Gay's parents. An aproach to the Chinese Family Traditions in the modern world. This Film is a Must have for your gay/lesbian collection
