About this product

Product Information

"Dr. Sarno saved me from a life of pain." -- Howard Stern The New York Times bestseller that has helped thousands leverage the mind-body connection to heal lower back pain and live pain free--without drugs, surgery, or physical therapy. Offering a surprising, noninvasive solution to an epidemic of pain, Dr. John E. Sarno's research on TMS (Tension Myoneural Syndrome) reveals that stress, anxiety and other psychological factors, not structural abnormalities, are the root cause of chronic pain. TMS develops as a result of repressed emotions which trigger tension in the body and deprive muscles and nerves of oxygen. The solution? Recognize the emotional roots of your TMS and sever the connection between mental and physical pain. With Dr. Sarno's expert guidance you will learn: How the mind-body connection can permanently heal shoulder, neck, and lower back pain How accepting negative emotions like anger, anxiety, fear, or grief can reverse physical symptoms How we condition ourselves to think back pain is inevitable Why you should resume physical activity as soon as possible Sharing case histories and the results of his extensive, groundbreaking research, Dr. Sarno's life-changing insights show readers how to banish back pain and reclaim their lives for good.

Reviews
Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain---Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder, which may affect muscles, nerves, tendons or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realisation sinks in (''and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough''),the trick doesn't work any more and there's no need for the pain.(Healing BackPain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain). - Joan Price, AMAZON.CO.UK REVIEW

Good informative book for those who suffer from backaches.

Good book if you have back problems which may be due to stress. I read a long article by him years ago, so now happy to have found Dr. Sarno's book.

    Psychobabble

I'm all for holistic medicine like NUCCA chiropractic and the like, but this is 100% grade D junk. There's big pharma and surgery at one end of the spectrum and then there's this at the kook end of mind control and self healing. If you're into pagan meditation, secular humanism, or even witchcraft; this might be for you. If your looking for real healing, I'd look elsewhere.

  • Read this if you have back pain

I bought this recently for a friend, but had read it for the first time thirty years ago, when I had back pain. Because of this book, I have been pain-free. You need to open your mind to believe how strong the mind-body connection is and understand that it's not just stress that causes the pain, but how you deal with it.

  • Life changing information

Very profound information that has been proved in my case. This book, among with Dr. Scott Brady's book Pain Free for Life, got me journaling out my worries and stresses and truly helped me release my muscle pain. My other illness is much easier to handle mentally and emotionally with the practical, usable information in this book.

  • Healing Back Pain - by John E. Sarno

This is a milestone text that every person that suffers from back pain should absolutely read. The thesis of Dr. Sarno's discussion is essentially based on the idea that over 90% of back pain is caused by excess muscle tension rather than skeletal disorders like disc herniation/rupture, or bone related spinal issues. Basically, it's all nonsense (stay away from the Orthopedic Surgeon). One of the most important assertions in the book is "no spinal trama, no spine related problems." In a nutshell this means that unless you had a serious accident that has tramatized your back, then there's nothing physiologically wrong with your back - end of story. That's not to say that the pain that you may be experiencing is not real - it absolutely is. It's the root cause that's been misdiagnosed ...
