About this product

Product Information

Written four hundred years before the birth of Christ, this detailed contemporary account of the long life-and-death struggle between Athens and Sparta stands an excellent chance of fulfilling its author's ambitious claim. Thucydides himself (c.460-400 BC) was an Athenian and achieved the rank of general in the earlier stages of the war. He applied thereafter a passion for accuracy and a contempt for myth and romance in compiling this factual record of a disastrous conflict.

  • waay better than homer

My professor assigned this version of Thucydides because he said it was the easiest, accurate translation to read. Personally, I love the story itself, although Thucydides is not a easily read author. It lacks the mythical aspects of Homer and the story doesn't end well for Athens but this is a fantastic records of an Ancient war. The political and civic aspects are interesting to compare to modern politics as well.

  • History of the Peloponnesian war

Unbelievable, written over 2000 years ago and so meaningful today, and great translation!

  • History?

Why yes, how are we to understand where we're going until we see where we've been and how we behaved there.

  • Great book

I want to live my life in the fullest most self-aware way I can. I think reading and, of course, having intense discussion is one of the most enriching experiences I have ever had the privilege to encounter.
