Humorous Hunting / Fishing / Memories(some Duplication)
Patrick McManus is the penultimate hunter who makes his living by not catching fish or bagging game. He brags about the shots he missed, the fish that got away and the times he has managed to get lost (a skill which he prizes highly). He also reminisces about growing up in Idaho, an experience which allowed him to experience "tenner shoe blight" firsthand (or, rather, "secondfoot"). I bought this book because, basically, I buy all his books. He writes well, and his works always bring a smile to my memory (I manage to relive many things I never lived through the first time). This is one of his last books. It is well-written and brings out the humor of the hunt. However, it is not as fresh as I would have hoped. The clear reading flows smoothly, but it doesn't have the energy of his earlier books. Stepping out of character, his first chapter is overly long. He tries, in essence, to answer the entire question (of how he got that way) in the first three dozen pages. As such, he seems to wander a bit. The later chapters drop back into a sharper style, but still don't generally have the exaggeration and wild abandon the McManus reader has come to expect. Additionally, you will see some duplication. I can understand the casual reference to a previous experience. However, some of the fragments of stories from his prior works definitely push the limit. Still, it is McManus, and it is good. You get to see Rancid Crabtree (the old, lanky woodsman he knew as a kid) wearing a blue dress and riding a bicycle. You get to see Crabtree again in another episode with Pat's childhood slingshot, Whomper. And you even experience a prime example of his "non-huntingmanship," including observing magical effect it has on others. If I could, I would rate this a 3.5. Since that option is not available, a 4 seems more accurate than a 3. If you like Patrick McManus, you will want to buy this book to help round out your collection. If you aren't familiar with his works, then wait. Spend your money on some of his earlier works. Then decide if you like him enough to buy this collection of reminiscences.

Always Funny...too good to put down.
Pat has made a career of rewriting life's events in a truly creative manner. Many of us have lived some of the same experiences without the creative ability to retell the events in such an attractive manner. My hats off to Pat. I sat down and read this book in a single sitting. Tried to put it down after each chapter but like potato chips thought I would read just one more until there were only a couple chapters left and then felt I might as well finish the book. Highly recommend his books to anyone, but especially to those interested in life and the outdoors. I used to listen to this book on audio cassette back in the day when cassette was cool. But this is a great book, lots of little giggles to some very loud "Lol's." Patrick McManus tells a story about when he was younger about the world around him seemed to be and how it seemed to be "out" to get him. Growing up with 3 woman, the mountains, life lessons, morals and everything else manly with a little humor added in.
