Product Information

PULITZER PRIZE WINNER * "A brilliant piece of military history which proves up to the hilt the force of Winston Churchill's statement that the first month of World War I was 'a drama never surpassed.'"-- Newsweek Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time In this landmark account, renowned historian Barbara W. Tuchman re-creates the first month of World War I: thirty days in the summer of 1914 that determined the course of the conflict, the century, and ultimately our present world. Beginning with the funeral of Edward VII, Tuchman traces each step that led to the inevitable clash. And inevitable it was, with all sides plotting their war for a generation. Dizzyingly comprehensive and spectacularly portrayed with her famous talent for evoking the characters of the war's key players, Tuchman's magnum opus is a classic for the ages. The Proud Tower, the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Guns of August, and The Zimmermann Telegram comprise Barbara W. Tuchman's classic histories of the First World War era

    Outstanding Classic on August 1914

Brilliant work discussing the months leading up to the outbreak of World War I as well as the pivotal battles of August 1914 that decided the course of the war. The Author's winning style and clear prose makes events as dull as troop movements entertaining. As for those reviews which criticize the central premise, Tuchman's argument is less that the great powers stumbled into WWI than that the war was preventable rather than inevitable. She does an excellent job highlighting German bellicosity and lust for conquest, making the criticisms based on the supposed failure to take into account the German desire for war unfounded. All in all, a classic that will sit well on any bookshelf.

  • Top critical review

    Classic book in poor confition

Great read but the book itself was in pretty bad shape - smellled of mold, pages falling out etc. - basically ready for the circular file (ie the trash can)

  • Intriguing title which, in a sense, tells the whole story

What more can you say about a book that JFK gave to his staff to read? What a great author. A brilliant woman who took time out of her most important job, being a mother, to gift us with things that she had found. Bravo!!

  • The Guns of August

I have read this marvelous book. Suberbly written, great subject, especially if you are interested in history. Gives the perspectives of the various leaders in European governments going into World War I, which began in August, 1914. View the oncoming war, and the progress of the war during the first fateful month of August, 1914 from the English, French, German and Russian government perspectives. Also interweaves the characteristics of leaders (i.e., Kaiser Wilhelm II, Churchill) in an intensely interesting way. Ms. Tuchman has demonstrated true genious in this wonderful book.

  • Poor map reproductions

Great book! However, the maps in the paperback Edition are worthless much too small and terribly reproduced. I’ll buy the hardcover edition for sure
