About this product

Product Information

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Diana Gabaldon weaves a dazzling tale of history, intrigue, and suspense in this first novel featuring one of her most popular characters from the Outlander saga: Lord John Grey. The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London's Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty's army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: The Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade-in-arms who may have been a traitor. Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society--and threatens all he holds dear. Praise for Lord John and the Private Matter "[A] thoroughly entertaining and wonderfully witty historical mystery set in the richly detailed, occasionally bawdy world of Georgian England." -- Booklist "Packed with vivid description and detail. Gabaldon aptly transports readers to eighteenth-century London, with all its reeking humanity and glitteringly elegant excess." -- BookPage

    Good read!

As an avid reader of most books Outlander related, I truly enjoyed the Lord John Series. They enhance and more fully develop some of her wonderful characters by providing very interesting backstories to her meat and potatoes big books.

  • Enjoyable Read With Lord John A Tenacious Detective

This was the first full novel featuring the Outlander series' Lord John Grey as the hero. It follows a short story, Lord John Grey & the Hellfire Club that I would recommend be read first due to this story referencing back to people and events in it. Lord John was a favorite character so I was pleased to enjoy a story with him in the forefront. I enjoyed him as a detective and to gain more insight into his character. In this story, Lord John runs into two separate dilemmas that require him to investigate for the truth. The first one is private regarding the fiance of his cousin who is more like a little sister in ways because she lives with his mother. He must determine if Joseph Trevelyan has the pox and if so how to discreetly break the engagement. The other matter involves the ...

  • Gabaldon does it again PURE BRILLIANCE

I have never read a fiction writer of such depth and complexity with wit and humor galore. Would that I had the words to say more than Brava! I was hesitant to start the Lord John books, but I love the Outlander series so much it was inevitable and I'm glad I did. The thing about Gabaldon is she does the meticulous research that other historical fiction writers rarely do. No anachronisms. Accurate depictions consistent with the time period. Splendid language and use of English. A rare treat.

  • Lord John and the private matter continues the series established in the Outlander Series

Lord John's was an excellent book, Dianne Gabaldon is a skilled writer.

  • Outlander extension Lord John Series

I enjoyed the Lord John series while having just completed the Outlander books ( 8 so far ) though I must say, they are different. I appreciated the way the two series fit together, and I enjoyed it once I got into it. IT was difficult at first, when I expected more Outlander, and it isn't, as is said where Diana comments on her work.
