About this product

Product Information

In 2006, Ben S. Bernanke was appointed chairman of the Federal Reserve, capping a meteoric trajectory from a rural South Carolina childhood to professorships at Stanford and Princeton, to public service in Washington's halls of power. There would be no time to celebrate, however--the burst of the housing bubble in 2007 set off a domino effect that would bring the global financial system to the brink of meltdown. In The Courage to Act, Ben Bernanke pulls back the curtain on the tireless and ultimately successful efforts to prevent a mass economic failure. Working with two US presidents and two Treasury secretaries, Bernanke and his colleagues used every Fed capability, no matter how arcane, to keep the US economy afloat. From his arrival in Washington in 2002 and his experiences before the crisis, to the intense days and weeks of the crisis itself, and through the Great Recession that followed, Bernanke gives readers an unequalled perspective on the American economy. This narrative will reveal for the first time how the creativity and decisiveness of a few key leaders prevented an economic collapse of unimaginable scale. Bernanke explains the inspiration behind the book's title, saying, "When the economic well-being of their nation demanded a strong and creative response, my colleagues at the Federal Reserve, policymakers and staff alike, mustered the moral courage to do what was necessary, often in the face of bitter criticism and condemnation. I am grateful to all of them and proud to have been part of the global effort to contain the most dangerous economic crisis of our time."

Revelatory...the book sheds light on many of the smaller dramas that hang over this crucial period of world economic history., Undoubtedly the best account we will ever have of how government and financial institutions dealt with what has come to be known as the Great Recession., Bernanke's Insights Are Instructive about What Went Wrong and How to Keep It from Happening Again., A fascinating account of the effort to save the world from another catastrophe [like the Great Depression].... Under Bernanke's chairmanship, the Fed, whatever its pre-crisis mistakes, helped save the U.S. and the world from a disaster. Humanity should be grateful., A careful, detailed, and exceptionally clear justification for the Fed's aggressive actions to avert another Great Depression and resuscitate the American economy., A fantastic and reasonably accessible introduction to the economic thought of a former Federal Reserve Chair.

I was looking so forward to the boxed set as described when I purchased, but only received the book, no cards. I sent message and pic of book only and the little plastic bag with all mail info. And in a day had a positive response from seller. Thank you for your quick response, and for making it right. I am happy to purchase from this seller in the future :)

  • Bernanke's mind on paper

The 2008 crisis has been well studied now and 3rd party evaluations have confirmed or clarified what Bernanke and others have made public. This is one of three perspectives from the leaders who repaired the problems. From a hardbound book perspective: paper, cover and print quality, Bernanke 2015 is the best of the three followed by Geithner 2014, Paulson 2010, I have all first edition printings, with this as a closed out NOS. The paper in Paulson's book is yellowing from age. Bernanke offers the technical perspective of crisis and is fairly dry reading, Paulson's the political and human aspect and first to be released, and Geithner a little of both, but leads as a more emotional and human side of being hit by daily recurring huge problems the week it began.
