Works as advertised. As others have remarked, it does dry your hair and scalp a bit. But, I like the clean feeling. Also, it does have a strong tar smell. But I just rinse well, and use a natural, good quality conditioner every other wash or so. The other "plus" is that the chemical list is a lot shorter than many other tar based shampoos I've used. All in all, a good value and actually works! 4 star review is for the short time, I've used the product. I've been regretful in the past for being premature in my assessments. I will update to 5 stars, if it's my long-term solution.

I like both the tar and the zinc DHS shampoo, as I ordered them both. They were highly recommended by my dermatologist for itchng, etc. and he said my scalp was very dry and he recommended alternating these two shampoos during each week which I have and my scalp no longer itches, my hair is soft and it just feels great. I would recommend these shampoos to anyone!

My dermatologist recommended this product and gave me a sample. After ordering multiple shampoos at varied price points to help with my itchy, flaky scalp--which even had psoriasis plaques in places--I thought, "Yeah, sure, one more useless shampoo. And coal tar? That's so old. Surely there's something better now." I was thrilled to discover how great this product is. Has it cured my psoriasis? No. I still need topical medication for the areas that occasionally flare up with plaques. But it stopped the flaking and itching from the first application! As my dermatologist recommended, I rub some of it in on the bad areas and wait a bit. Then I shampoo and let the solution sit for a while before rinsing it out. I love this shampoo! It is affordable and long-lasting, as it doesn't take a whole lot to do my hair. I generally use it twice a week.Read full review

Good product to treat a scalp that gets itchy after a couple days and feels inflamed. I use a hair conditioner afterwards for the ends. Works great.

Back in the late 1980s, I had recurring ear infections that my primary care doctor could not get rid of with antibiotics, ear drops, or other medications, so he sent me to a specialist of some kind--I can't recall now what his specialty was--and to my great surprise, he prescribed DHS, a shampoo that I could then find at any local pharmacy, my grocery store, and all over. I was highly skeptical and put off buying some when I saw how much more it cost than my regular shampoo, and even other OTC tar-gel shampoos. However, when I soon had another raging infection, I decided to try out some DHS, and--sure enough!--in a couple of weeks I started getting less and less of the ugly stuff that came out of my ear whenever I had one of those infections. So, I've used DHS regularly, usually twice a week, every week for decades, and I swear by it.Read full review
