This movie is a logical continuation to the Road to Avonlea -TV series which ended after seven seasons. It begins with flashbacks of the last episode of season 7 to help those who don't know the background to understand at least a little bit of where the movie is coming from. The movie starts with the world going to war (WWI). People's attitudes about life changed with their particular involvement in it, and in the little town of Avonlea, war made a very large difference in how they lived their lives and viewed the world now. Sometimes the advertising or old war movies make us think that everyone was in favor of the war and "getting behind the guys" (supporting the U.S./Canadian soldiers), but the movie makes you realize there are many perspectives about war we don't often think about or like to remember. (It doesn't get maudlin, though.) The movie seems to be about Hetty King, but it's really more about Janet, I think. Hetty seems to be very stoic about the war -"duty", etc., but when faced with Felix's predicament (Missing In Action), she fails to empathize very well with Janet (his mom, who is devastated) and Alec (Felix's father) and their family (Felicity & Cecily). This is not totally surprising, since Hetty never married and had children; however, she was the teacher of Avonlea school for 40 years, and you would think she would be a little more empathetic, especially since this is her own nephew who is missing. Many of the regular supporting cast are featured in the film, making it feel all the more that this really is Avonlea and the people you know who are going through the wartime, and they help give a feeling of reality and cohesiveness to the story. One thing I did miss was not seeing Gus Pike or Jasper Dale (except in the beginning flashback)- excuses were made for why they weren't there (explained in the story) but it would have been nice to see them. Felicity and Cecily's characters are developed more in this story also, and it's nice to see it. I just wish there was a way of keeping the story going. It would be nice if there were more Avonlea movies to come, but since people grow and age and it takes (probably) at least a year to make a movie, and that's -after- --you write the script, get funding, hire the actors, etc.,-- it isn't likely that Sullivan will get everyone together again for another one. A shame, really. The movie is basically a good story, but my son thought the plot line was rather thin (he's 15 yrs old- very action oriented ;-). But for those of us who love Avonlea and its people, it is a good "last look" at those we have come to know and love over the years. Enjoy this one - it's probably the last you'll see.Read full review
As always, Kevin Sullivan has kept the Avonlea story alive with this fantastic saga. The views are as stunning as always and the children have started on their journeys into adulthood. The realities of war, illness, and lessons learned have made this movie a must see. The characters have evolved and each one has brought a freshness to their roles. As a fan of this delightful series, it's just not complete until you've seen this special holiday edition.
