Dilemma
This is a powerful flash. I bought it because of the gimmicky double flash that it has. It has one little flash in the front and a large head that revolves pretty much to where you want it. This, in theory, allows you to bounce the big flash and still have a nice highlight in the eyes of your subject from the little flash. What happens in reality is that there seems to be no standard ratio between the two,like 2 to 1 maybe, or 1-2 stops less than the mainlight. If your subject is too close, you will get that ugly washed out effect. At about 10 feet, you will distinguish two competing shadows. I tried taping onion paper, printer paper, and finally, cardboard to that annoying little flash in the front. I have now opted for the flash adapter for my F3 to use a standard flash. Yeah, ... The best ever Electronic flash
I have owned eight different models of Nikon Speedlights in my over 40 years as a photographer, and this Nikon SB-16 is by far the best of all of them.It works for bounce and direct flash automatically, and I know if I put this unit on my camera, there will be no problems. The "slave" stand is a plus as well and now I can use multiple strobes with it.

Awesome product and great value for money!
The flash is very good having TTL facilities for both F3 series and also FG, FG20, FE2, FA, FM3A, F4 and F5 by having interchangeable shoe. Besides that it can be used with aperture preferred controlled and full manual controlled to any camera. Great flash light with very great price as no one really given me a fight during the bid.

if you have an F3, you need one of these.
Although it makes my F3 a bit top-heavy, the SB-16A does the job nicely! This judgement may evaporate when my wrist recovers from a recent bruise. The biggest problem was simply getting back in practice.
